Shower Benches & Seats

A tileable shower bench is a seating component designed to become part of a tiled shower assembly. Depending on its construction, the bench can provide a tile-ready surface or require additional preparation and waterproofing before tile installation. Available configurations include corner, rectangular, floating, suspended, and floor-supported benches.

A floating shower bench is supported from a compatible wall structure and leaves the floor beneath it open. A floor-supported bench transfers support through a structure extending to the shower floor. Installation, framing, waterproofing, mounting, and load requirements depend on the specific bench system.

Shower benches must be properly integrated into the waterproofing system used for the shower assembly. Some bench products can incorporate waterproof or moisture-resistant construction, while others require additional waterproofing. Seams, transitions, fasteners, mounting points, and penetrations should be treated according to the applicable system requirements.

Compatible shower benches can be incorporated into steam shower installations, but the complete assembly must meet the waterproofing and vapor-management requirements of the steam shower system. Verify bench construction and properly integrate seams, penetrations, mounting points, and surrounding surfaces with the specified vapor-management system.

A corner shower bench is designed to fit where two shower walls meet, providing a seating surface while occupying less space than many full rectangular benches. Corner benches can use tile-ready, wall-mounted, or other constructions depending on the product and require compatible structural support and waterproofing.

The finished horizontal seating surface should provide the drainage characteristics required by the shower assembly and applicable installation requirements. Some tile-ready benches incorporate slope, while others require it to be established during installation. Follow the bench and waterproofing system specifications when preparing the finished tiled surface.

Floating shower benches use structural supports attached to suitable wall framing or another manufacturer-approved structure. The required brackets, fasteners, framing, spacing, and allowable loads vary by system. Mounting penetrations must also be integrated correctly with the waterproofing assembly used in the shower.

Consider the shower dimensions, seating location, desired bench size, and whether a corner, rectangular, floating, or floor-supported design works best. Also verify structural support, mounting requirements, waterproofing compatibility, finished tile construction, load requirements, and steam shower compatibility when applicable.
