Linear Drains

A linear shower drain collects water along an elongated channel and can support a single-plane floor slope in compatible shower layouts. This can simplify some curbless and large-format tile installations. Drain placement, shower dimensions, waterproofing, plumbing, and floor construction still determine the appropriate slope and overall shower design.

A tile-in linear drain uses a removable insert designed to receive compatible tile so much of the drain coordinates with the surrounding shower floor. Water enters through openings around the tiled insert and flows into the channel below. Tile thickness, insert depth, setting material, and drain compatibility should be verified.

Linear drains can support a single-plane shower floor in compatible layouts, reducing the intersecting slopes commonly required around a point drain. This can make some large-format tile layouts easier to plan with fewer directional cuts. Drain location, tile dimensions, shower geometry, and required slope still need to be coordinated.

Linear drains can be installed along a shower wall, near an entry, or in another approved location depending on the drain system and shower design. Placement affects floor slope, plumbing, waterproofing, tile layout, and drain length, so the location should be established before constructing the shower floor.

Linear drains can integrate with compatible bonded membranes, shower pans, liquid waterproofing systems, and other waterproof shower assemblies. The connection method varies by drain and can use bonding flanges, membranes, flashing, or other components. Verify that the drain and waterproofing products are specifically designed or approved to work together.

Linear drain length depends on shower dimensions, drain placement, floor design, plumbing configuration, and the specific drain system. A wall-to-wall design can require different sizing from a shorter drain positioned within the shower floor. Follow the manufacturer's dimensional and installation requirements when selecting the appropriate drain length.

Linear drains are commonly used in curbless showers because compatible layouts can direct water toward the drain across a single sloped plane. The drain alone does not create a curbless shower. Floor elevation, slope, waterproofing, entry transitions, plumbing, and water containment must all be designed for the complete installation.

Start with the shower dimensions, intended drain location, waterproofing system, plumbing outlet, and floor slope. Then consider drain length, outlet position, tile size, adjustment requirements, and whether you prefer a decorative grate or tile-in cover. Select drain and waterproofing components designed to function together within the shower assembly.
