Shower Bases for Tile Installations
Shower Bases provide preformed foundations for constructing compatible tiled shower floors. Also commonly called shower pans or shower trays, they are available in different dimensions, slopes, drain configurations, and installation designs. Options for curbed and curbless showers, point and linear drains, and different drain locations allow installers to match the base to the shower layout, plumbing, waterproofing system, and finished tile requirements.
Types of Tile-Ready Shower Bases
Curbed & Curbless Shower Pans
Curbed shower pans are designed for assemblies with a raised threshold, while curbless shower bases support compatible low-profile or barrier-free layouts. Curbless installations require coordination between the base, surrounding floor elevations, drainage, waterproofing, and finished tile to create the intended transition and slope.
Linear & Point Drain Shower Trays
Linear drain shower trays direct water toward a compatible channel-style drain, while point drain pans slope toward a smaller drain opening. Point drain bases may be available with center, offset, or other specified drain locations. The base configuration should be matched to the selected drain and plumbing layout.
Tile-Ready Shower Pans & Waterproofing
Shower bases must integrate with the waterproofing and drainage system used in the shower assembly. Depending on the product, the base may incorporate a waterproof surface or require compatible membranes, seals, bands, or other waterproofing components. Products from different shower systems should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
Choosing the Right Shower Base
Compare shower bases based on shower dimensions, drain type and location, curbed or curbless entry, floor construction, waterproofing method, and finished tile requirements. When a nonstandard layout is required, also verify whether the selected base can be trimmed, extended, recessed, or otherwise modified according to the manufacturer's specifications.
