Construction Adhesive

Construction adhesive is used to bond compatible building materials during construction, remodeling, repair, and installation projects. Depending on the product, approved materials can include wood, concrete, masonry, drywall, metal, foam board, panels, stone, and trim. Material compatibility and interior or exterior suitability vary by adhesive formulation.

Polyurethane describes a specific adhesive chemistry, while construction adhesive is a broader product category containing multiple formulations. Polyurethane products can offer characteristics such as moisture resistance, flexibility, or gap filling, but performance varies by product. The appropriate adhesive should be selected according to the materials, environment, and application rather than chemistry alone.

Many construction adhesives are approved for bonding compatible materials to concrete, brick, block, and other masonry surfaces. The substrate typically needs to be sound and properly prepared according to the adhesive manufacturer's requirements. Moisture conditions, surface coatings, temperature, material combination, and environmental exposure can affect product selection and bond performance.

Construction adhesives specifically approved for subfloor applications can be used as part of compatible floor assemblies. Subfloor adhesives bond panels to approved framing and can help limit movement within the assembly. Adhesive placement, panel installation, mechanical fastening, working time, and environmental requirements should follow the specifications for the selected product and floor system.

Fast-grab or high-grab construction adhesive is formulated to provide increased initial hold after materials are positioned. This can be useful for panels, trim, molding, and vertical applications. Fast grab does not mean immediate full cure, and heavier materials can still require temporary support or mechanical fastening during the curing period.

Some construction adhesives are specifically formulated for compatible foam insulation boards and building panels, but not every adhesive is foam-safe. Certain formulations can damage or fail to bond particular foam materials. Verify that the adhesive manufacturer approves the specific foam or panel type before application and follow its installation requirements.

Construction adhesives approved for exterior applications can be used outdoors within their specified environmental and material limitations. Exterior products can be designed for exposure to moisture and temperature changes, but weather resistance varies. Verify substrate compatibility, application temperature, moisture conditions, curing requirements, and allowable exposure for the specific adhesive.

Construction adhesive cure time varies by formulation, materials, bead thickness, temperature, humidity, airflow, and substrate porosity. Initial grab or set time is different from full cure time. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions for working time, repositioning, temporary support, load application, and the time required before the bond reaches its intended performance.
