Specialty Adhesives

Specialty adhesives are used for bonding and repair applications that require particular adhesive properties, material compatibility, or application methods. Depending on the product, they can be used with tile, stone, plastics, foam, wood, metal, wallcoverings, trim, and other materials for repairs, fabrication, assembly, and detailed installation work.

Epoxy adhesives are used for compatible repairs, material assembly, filling, and bonding applications. Many two-part epoxies can bond materials such as stone, ceramics, metal, wood, and certain plastics. Approved materials, working time, cure time, strength, flexibility, moisture resistance, and environmental limitations vary according to the specific epoxy formulation.

Spray adhesives can be formulated for compatible foam, fabric, paper, insulation, laminates, plastics, and other sheet or surface materials. Material compatibility varies considerably between products, especially with plastics and foam. Check the adhesive specifications for the exact materials, desired bond type, environmental exposure, and surface preparation requirements.

Super glue typically uses fast-curing cyanoacrylate chemistry for small, close-fitting parts and precision bonding. Epoxy adhesives generally combine resin and hardener and can offer different gap-filling, working-time, and bonding characteristics. Neither type is universally stronger or more suitable, so selection should be based on the materials and application.

Plastic bonding requires an adhesive compatible with the specific type of plastic being joined. Epoxies, cyanoacrylates, and other specialty formulations can bond certain plastics, while difficult low-surface-energy plastics can require specialized products or primers. Identify the plastic whenever possible and verify adhesive compatibility before beginning the repair or installation.

Some specialty adhesives are formulated specifically for compatible foam insulation, panels, and other foam materials. Adhesive chemistry matters because certain products can attack or damage particular foams. Verify that the adhesive manufacturer approves the exact foam type, surrounding substrate, environmental exposure, and intended application before use.

Specialty adhesives can be appropriate for certain repairs, small components, trim, fabrication, or localized bonding tasks where traditional tile-setting mortar is not suitable. They should not automatically replace mortar for standard tile installation. Tile material, size, substrate, moisture exposure, service conditions, and adhesive approval should determine the appropriate bonding product.

Start by identifying the exact materials being bonded and the conditions the bond will experience. Consider working and cure time, joint size, flexibility, moisture, temperature, interior or exterior use, and application method. For plastics, foam, finished surfaces, and other sensitive materials, verify product compatibility before applying the adhesive.
