Tile & Stone Enhancers

A tile and stone enhancer deepens the existing color and emphasizes natural variation in compatible porous materials. Many enhancers also function as penetrating sealers and provide stain resistance as specified by the product. The amount of color change depends on the material, finish, porosity, and enhancer formulation.

Enhancing sealers deliberately deepen or enrich the appearance of compatible porous materials, while natural-look sealers are generally intended to provide protection with minimal visible change. Both can use penetrating technology, so the primary distinction is the desired appearance rather than assuming they represent completely different methods of sealing.

Not necessarily. A wet look can describe the darker, richer color produced when an enhancer penetrates porous stone without creating a glossy surface coating. Some products can affect sheen differently, so check the specific finish description and test the enhancer on the actual material before treating the complete installation.

Enhancers can be used on compatible porous materials such as travertine, slate, limestone, marble, grout, concrete, masonry, and certain tile surfaces. Suitability depends on the individual product and surface finish. Dense, polished, glazed, or previously sealed materials may not absorb an enhancing treatment as intended.

Some enhancing sealers are suitable for porous cementitious grout and can deepen its existing color while providing the protection specified for the product. Enhancement is not the same as applying an opaque grout colorant, so it will not necessarily conceal stains or completely change the grout to another color.

Many stone enhancers are formulated as penetrating enhancing sealers and provide stain or liquid resistance in addition to changing surface appearance. Protection varies by product, however, so an enhancer should not automatically be assumed to provide every characteristic of a dedicated sealer. Review the specific product's approved uses and performance.

Enhancing sealers can be used during certain restoration or maintenance projects to deepen natural color on compatible stone. They do not repair scratches, etching, cracks, lippage, or worn finishes. Physical surface damage may require honing, polishing, grinding, or another restoration process before an enhancing treatment is applied.

Verify that the product is compatible with the surface and intended exposure. Because enhancement deliberately alters appearance, always test the treatment in an inconspicuous area or on a sample before completing the application.
