Tile Backer board

Tile backer board provides a compatible substrate for tile installations on walls, floors, showers, tub surrounds, countertops, backsplashes, and other approved surfaces. It is installed between the supporting structure and finished tile assembly, with suitable applications varying according to the material, thickness, construction, and manufacturer specifications.

Cement board uses a dense cementitious construction, while foam backer board uses a lightweight foam core with surfaces designed for tile installation. Foam boards can offer integrated waterproofing depending on the product, while cement boards can require separate waterproofing in wet areas. Weight, thickness, fastening, and installation requirements also differ.

Some tile backer boards are waterproof when installed as a complete manufacturer-specified system, while others are not. Waterproof panels can still require treatment at seams, fasteners, corners, and penetrations. Cementitious and other backer boards can require a separate waterproofing membrane when used in showers or other wet areas.

Shower walls can use compatible foam backer board, waterproof building panels, cementitious backer board, and other approved tile substrates. The appropriate shower backer board depends on the wall construction and waterproofing system. Verify whether the selected panel provides waterproofing itself or requires a separate membrane before tile installation.

Backer boards specifically approved for floor applications can be installed over suitable subfloors as part of a tile assembly. The board does not replace structural subfloor requirements. Panel thickness, bonding materials, fastening, joint treatment, subfloor preparation, and allowable tile applications should follow the backer board manufacturer's specifications.

Tile backer board thickness depends on the product, installation area, supporting structure, framing or subfloor configuration, and required assembly thickness. Different panels can have different approved uses at the same nominal thickness. Select the thickness specified by the manufacturer for the particular wall, floor, shower, or other application.

It depends on the backer board and shower system. Some waterproof shower wall panels can serve as the primary waterproof surface when their seams and penetrations are properly treated. Other backer boards require a separate waterproofing membrane. Follow the board and waterproofing manufacturers' requirements for the complete shower assembly.

Consider the installation area, wall or floor construction, moisture exposure, panel thickness, waterproofing requirements, and finished tile assembly.
