Adhesives

Adhesives are primarily formulated to bond compatible materials together, while sealants are primarily used to fill and seal joints, gaps, and transitions. Some products can provide both bonding and sealing functions. The appropriate product depends on the materials, expected movement, moisture exposure, environment, and requirements of the installation.

Tile installations commonly use cementitious thin-set mortars and other tile adhesives selected for the specific tile and substrate. Ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, large-format tile, walls, floors, and wet areas can have different bonding requirements. Follow the tile, substrate, and adhesive manufacturer's specifications when selecting the appropriate product.

Wet-area installations can use compatible tile mortars, construction adhesives, silicone sealants, waterproofing sealants, and specialty bonding products depending on the assembly. Products should be approved for the specific substrate, material, and moisture exposure. Not every construction adhesive or sealant is suitable for shower or wet-area applications.

Construction adhesive is a broad category of bonding products formulated for compatible building materials, while tile adhesives are specifically intended for approved tile installations. A general construction adhesive should not be substituted for a specified tile-setting material unless the manufacturer explicitly approves it for the tile, substrate, and application.

Many silicone, polyurethane, hybrid, and other elastomeric sealants are formulated to remain flexible after curing so they can accommodate specified joint movement. Flexibility and movement capability vary significantly by product. Select the sealant according to the joint design, adjoining materials, environmental exposure, and manufacturer performance specifications.

Cure time can be affected by product chemistry, application thickness, temperature, humidity, airflow, substrate characteristics, joint dimensions, and environmental conditions. Some products cure through moisture exposure while others use different mechanisms. Follow the manufacturer's stated working, skin, cure, and service times rather than applying one timeline to every adhesive.

Some adhesives and sealants are formulated for exterior use, while others are limited to interior applications. Exterior products must be compatible with the materials and expected environmental exposure, which can include moisture, temperature changes, sunlight, and movement. Verify the product's approved service conditions before using it outdoors.

Start with the materials being bonded or sealed and the function the product must perform. Consider substrate compatibility, moisture exposure, expected movement, interior or exterior use, cure requirements, application conditions, and dispensing format. Select a product specifically approved for those conditions and follow its preparation and installation requirements.
