Radiant Heating

Electric radiant floor heating uses electric heating cables or mats installed within or beneath a compatible floor assembly to warm the finished surface. Systems typically include heating elements, a thermostat, and a floor sensor, with additional membranes, relays, or accessories used depending on the installation and system design.

Ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and natural stone are commonly installed over compatible electric radiant floor heating systems. Some systems can also be approved for additional floor coverings. Maximum temperature, installation method, setting materials, underlayment, and floor-covering compatibility should be verified with both the heating system and flooring manufacturers.

Heat cables provide flexible routing and spacing options for custom floor layouts, while heat mats arrange cable at predetermined spacing on a supporting material. Mats can simplify installation across suitable open areas, while cables can provide greater layout flexibility around room dimensions and fixed objects. Exact installation methods vary by system.

Electric radiant floor heating systems generally use a compatible thermostat and temperature sensor to control system operation. Thermostats can provide floor temperature regulation, schedules, and additional features depending on the model. Control requirements, sensor placement, voltage, electrical load, and any required relays should follow the heating system specifications.

Some uncoupling membranes are specifically designed with channels or attachment points for compatible electric heating cables while also providing an uncoupling function beneath tile. Not every uncoupling membrane accepts heating cable, so the membrane and cable must be approved for use together as part of the floor heating system.

Certain electric floor heating systems are approved for installation within compatible shower assemblies, while others are not. Shower installations require additional consideration for waterproofing, electrical safety, cable placement, controls, and system integration. Verify that the specific heating system is approved for the intended shower or wet-area application before installation.

Floor heating should be sized according to the actual area approved for heating rather than simply the room's total square footage. Permanent fixtures, cabinets, walls, drains, clearances, and other restricted areas can affect the heating layout. Follow the manufacturer's layout and sizing requirements for the selected cable or mat system.

Consider the floor covering, heated area, room shape, available voltage, installation method, required output, and preferred controls. Heat cables can provide greater layout flexibility, while mats can simplify suitable open areas. Also verify thermostat, sensor, membrane, waterproofing, and electrical compatibility with the complete heating system.
