Stone Restoration & Polishing

Etching occurs when acidic or otherwise reactive substances chemically alter susceptible stone. Marble, limestone, and travertine are particularly vulnerable because of their calcium-based composition. Foods, beverages, bathroom products, and acidic cleaners can create dull spots or rings that usually require surface refinement rather than ordinary cleaning to correct.

Honing uses abrasive refinement to smooth the stone, reduce appropriate scratches and wear, and create a uniform lower-reflectivity finish. Polishing further refines compatible stone to increase clarity, gloss, and reflectivity. The correct process depends on the stone, existing condition, and whether a honed or polished finish is desired.

Stone stains can be treated with specialty cleaners, stain removers, or poultices selected for the contaminant and stone. Poultices are commonly used to help draw absorbed stains from porous material. Oil, rust, organic, and other stains can require different chemistry, so identifying the stain is important before treatment.

A stain generally involves a substance penetrating or discoloring the stone, while an etch is a chemical alteration of the stone surface itself. Stains can require cleaners or poultices, while etching can require honing or polishing to restore the affected finish. Similar appearances can make proper identification important.

Dull spots and rings can result from etching, mineral deposits, moisture, surface residue, coatings, staining, or physical wear. These conditions can look similar but require different treatments. Determine whether the mark is on the surface, absorbed into the stone, or represents actual finish damage before choosing a restoration product.

Marble and granite can use polishing powders, pastes, compounds, abrasives, and other restoration products formulated for the specific stone. Their polishing chemistry and procedures differ, so a product intended for marble should not automatically be used on granite. Match the polishing system to the stone and desired finish.

Polishing can reduce certain very fine surface imperfections, but deeper scratches generally require abrasive honing or grinding before polishing. The depth of the scratch, stone type, and existing finish determine the appropriate restoration process. Severe damage or widespread scratching can require professional mechanical refinishing for a uniform result.

Identify the stone type, existing finish, and condition being corrected first. Determine whether the problem involves staining, etching, mineral deposits, scratches, wear, or loss of gloss. Then choose a cleaner, poultice, honing product, polishing compound, or restoration treatment specifically compatible with that stone and desired finish.
