About This Product

Seals Porous and Damaged Interior Surfaces

Zinsser® GARDZ® Problem Surface Sealer is a clear, water-based acrylic resin sealer for porous interior surfaces before painting, texturing, or wallcovering. It penetrates deeply and dries to a hard, moisture-resistant film that stabilizes problem surfaces including damaged drywall, joint compound, spackling, plaster, cementitious coatings, calcimine, stucco, and textured finishes.

Repairs and Strengthens Damaged Drywall

GARDZ penetrates and seals damaged drywall facing paper to create a sound surface for skim coating, repair, painting, or wallcovering. On new drywall, joint compound, and spackling, it uniformly seals porous areas and helps prevent blistering, bubbling, tearing, and damage during future redecorating.

Seals Wallpaper Adhesive and Chalky Surfaces

Residual wallpaper adhesive can reactivate beneath water-based paint or texture and cause cracking or peeling. GARDZ seals in old wallpaper paste and adhesive residue before recoating. Its penetrating formula also binds chalky surfaces and can be applied to high-pH surfaces up to 12.5.

Hardens Texture and Popcorn Finishes

GARDZ can be used on textured walls and popcorn ceilings where soft or crumbly material needs stabilization. It penetrates and hardens the texture while forming a water-resistant barrier that helps prevent subsequent primer, paint, or other water-based coatings from softening the underlying finish.

Clear, Low-Odor Water-Based Formula

The sealer appears milky blue-white during application to help identify coated areas and dries water clear. It is supplied ready to use and should not be tinted.
