Product Information
HMK® R179 Rust Remover is a specialty stone cleaner formulated to remove rust staining from natural and artificial stone. Especially suited to polished marble, limestone, and travertine, it provides a targeted solution for soft stone surfaces where iron contamination can leave highly visible discoloration.
Rust marks can develop from metal furniture, central heating leaks, fertilizers containing iron, iron filings, and similar sources. HMK R179 chemically reacts with this iron contamination to remove visible stains, helping restore a cleaner and more consistent appearance to the affected stone.
HMK R179 is supplied ready to use, eliminating the need to measure or mix a cleaning solution. Special rust inhibitors complement the stain-removing reaction by helping reduce future rust development, providing added value when treating stone exposed to iron-related discoloration.
Common Questions
HMK® R179 is suitable for natural and artificial stone surfaces and is especially recommended for polished marble, limestone, and travertine. Because stone composition and finish can vary, test the rust remover in an inconspicuous area before treating the entire stained surface.
It removes rust marks caused by metal furniture, leaking central heating systems, fertilizers containing iron, iron filings, and similar iron contamination. This makes HMK R179 useful for addressing both isolated rust spots and broader discoloration caused by contact with iron-bearing materials.
Yes. HMK R179 contains special rust inhibitors that help reduce future rust development after the existing stain is treated. This added feature complements the cleaner’s stain-removing action and is particularly useful on stone that has been exposed to recurring contact with iron-bearing materials.
HMK R179 is supplied ready to use and should be applied undiluted to a cool, dry surface. Allow it to work for approximately 10 to 15 minutes without drying, remove the remaining cleaner, then wash the area with diluted HMK® R155 Intensive Cleaner and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
A violet color and distinctive odor are normal signs of the chemical reaction that occurs while HMK R179 works on rust contamination. These changes do not necessarily indicate damage or product failure, but the area should remain well ventilated throughout treatment, especially when cleaning stone indoors.
Older or deeply established rust stains may not disappear after the first treatment. HMK recommends repeating the cleaning process as needed until the stain has been removed while following the same dwell-time, rinsing, ventilation, and surface-temperature requirements during each application.
Do not apply HMK R179 in direct sunlight, on hot surfaces, or when temperatures are below 50°F or above 80°F. Use it in a well-ventilated area, avoid eye and skin contact, wear suitable protective equipment, and test an inconspicuous area before treating the full surface.
One 0.5-liter spray bottle covers approximately 50 to 110 square feet. Actual coverage depends on the stone’s porosity, the size and severity of the rust stains, and whether older or stubborn contamination requires more than one treatment across the affected area.
