Product Information
GoBoard® Tile Backer Board is a lightweight, waterproof foam substrate designed for residential and light commercial tile installations. The nominal 1/2" × 3' × 5' panels provide a durable, tile-ready surface for walls, floors, ceilings, showers, and tub surrounds.
GoBoard weighs up to 80% less than traditional cement backer board, making each panel easier to carry, position, and install. The foam core board scores and snaps with a standard utility knife, allowing clean on-site cuts with minimal dust and no cement board crumbling.
The GoBoard foam core is waterproof, eliminating the need to apply a separate waterproofing layer over the entire panel surface. All board joints and fastener penetrations must be sealed with GoBoard® Pro Sealant or an approved GoBoard banding method to complete a waterproof tile assembly.
Choose the 7-Pack for smaller installations or the 60 Sheet Pallet for larger residential and commercial projects. Each 3' × 5' panel provides 15 square feet of coverage before cuts and project waste.
Common Questions
Yes. The polyiso foam core passes ASTM D4068 waterproof testing and has a water-vapor transmission rating below 1 perm. To complete a waterproof assembly, all board joints, corners, changes of plane, and fastener penetrations must be sealed according to current GoBoard installation instructions.
Each panel measures a nominal 1/2" thick by 3' wide by 5' long and provides 15 square feet of coverage. Johns Manville’s technical data lists the tested panel thickness as approximately 0.49", which should be considered when planning transitions to adjacent surfaces.
GoBoard Tile Backer Board is available as a 7-Pack or a 60 Sheet Pallet. The 7-Pack provides up to 105 square feet, while the 60 Sheet Pallet provides up to 900 square feet before accounting for cuts, layout, breakage, and project waste.
The 1/2" panels are designed for approved tile installations on walls, floors, ceilings, showers, and tub surrounds. They can be used in residential and light commercial projects when the substrate, framing, fasteners, mortar, tile size, and waterproofing details meet current GoBoard requirements.
Score the panel facing with a standard utility knife, then snap the board along the cut. Multiple knife passes or an appropriate power tool may also be used. Wear gloves, safety glasses, long sleeves, and other required protection because the panel facings contain glass fibers.
Yes. Once the panels are securely installed and the required joints and penetrations are sealed, tile can be bonded directly to GoBoard with an approved thin-set mortar. For floor applications, Johns Manville requires tiles to measure at least 6" in each individual dimension.
Use GoBoard Fasteners, GoBoard Washers with approved screws, or another fastening option listed for the framing and application. For waterproof installations, fill and cover all panel joints and completely cover every fastener penetration with GoBoard Pro Sealant or an approved GoBoard banding method.
Johns Manville approves ANSI A118.1 dry-set mortar or ANSI A118.4 polymer-modified thin-set mortar for bonding. Floor installations also require GoBoard to be fully embedded in the specified mortar. Confirm that the selected mortar is appropriate for the tile and project conditions.
Yes. GoBoard can be used in qualifying exterior applications when the complete assembly follows Johns Manville’s exterior installation requirements. Proper slope, drainage, movement joints, substrate preparation, mortar selection, and compliance with applicable building codes are required.
GoBoard can be installed in residential steam showers, but the waterproof foam board alone does not provide the complete vapor-control system. An additional approved vapor barrier, such as GoBoard Membrane, a compatible behind-the-board barrier, or an approved liquid membrane is required.
