The XPro Tile Leveling System provides two approaches for controlling lippage and aligning adjacent tile edges during installation: a clip-and-wedge system and a tool-free spin system. Both are designed for wall and floor tile installations, with multiple joint sizes available to accommodate different grout-joint requirements.
Choosing between the two XPro systems comes down to the adjustment method you prefer, the tile thickness, required joint width, and whether you want to use leveling pliers or a hand-tightened cap.
XPro manufactures tile leveling components designed to help control differences in elevation between adjoining tiles while the setting material cures. The system is commonly used with ceramic, porcelain, rectified, and large-format tile installations on walls and floors.
Like other tile leveling systems, XPro components do not flatten an uneven substrate, eliminate tile warpage, or replace proper mortar coverage. They are installation aids that help maintain the relationship between neighboring tile edges while the tile is being set.
Tile This carries XPro tile leveling systems and accessories, including clips, wedges, spin spacers, caps, and leveling pliers.
The XPro Clip Tile Leveling System uses disposable clips positioned beneath adjacent tiles and reusable wedges inserted through the clips. Tightening the wedge applies controlled pressure to help align neighboring tile surfaces.
XPro clips feature a thin base and are designed for wall and floor installations. The reusable wedges work across the available XPro clip sizes, allowing installers to replace the consumable clips while continuing to use the same wedges.
XPro leveling clips are available in multiple joint sizes:
The clips are designed for tile from approximately 3 mm to 12 mm thick. Select the clip according to both the required grout-joint width and tile-thickness compatibility rather than choosing a size solely because it produces the narrowest possible joint.
XPro wedges are reusable and work with the different XPro leveling clip sizes. The wedge passes through the clip and applies pressure across adjacent tiles as it is tightened.
Once the setting material has cured sufficiently, the disposable clip is removed at its designed break point while the wedge can be retained for another installation.
XPro leveling pliers can be used with the clip-and-wedge system to insert wedges with controlled, adjustable pressure.
The pliers provide multiple adjustment positions for different tile thicknesses and can help installers apply wedges more consistently across larger installations. Pressure should still be controlled rather than simply tightening each wedge as far as possible.
The XPro Spin Tile Leveling System replaces the traditional wedge with a reusable threaded cap. A disposable spin spacer is positioned beneath the adjoining tiles, and the cap threads onto the exposed post.
The cap is tightened by hand, so separate leveling pliers are not required.
XPro spin spacers are designed for wall and floor tile from approximately 3 mm to 15 mm thick.
The XPro Spin system is available in three joint sizes:
The disposable spacer establishes the selected joint while providing the connection point for the reusable cap.
XPro Spin Caps are reusable threaded components that work with the XPro Spin Spacers. The cap is twisted down by hand until appropriate pressure is applied between the neighboring tile surfaces.
Because the spin system is hand tightened, it provides an alternative for installers who prefer not to use separate wedges and leveling pliers.
| Feature | XPro Clip & Wedge | XPro Spin |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustment Method | Reusable wedge inserted through clip | Reusable threaded cap tightened by hand |
| Disposable Component | Leveling clip | Spin spacer/post |
| Reusable Component | Wedge | Spin cap |
| Tool Required | Pliers available for controlled wedge installation | No separate tensioning tool required |
| Available Joint Sizes | 1/64", 1/32", 1/16", 1/8", 3/16" | 1/32", 1/16", 1/8" |
| Tile Thickness | Approximately 3-12 mm | Approximately 3-15 mm |
| Installation Areas | Walls & Floors | Walls & Floors |
The clip-and-wedge system offers the broader selection of joint sizes and uses reusable wedges that can be installed manually or with XPro leveling pliers. It may appeal to installers already accustomed to traditional wedge-style leveling systems.
The Spin system provides a tool-free alternative. Its reusable cap is tightened directly onto the spacer post by hand, eliminating the separate wedge and pliers used by the clip system.
Neither design is universally better. Choose according to the required joint width, tile thickness, component specifications, and the adjustment method you prefer.
Both XPro systems can be used with large-format tile within their specified tile-thickness ranges. Leveling systems are particularly useful in these installations because differences in elevation between adjoining tile edges can become more noticeable as tile dimensions increase.
The leveling system should be used alongside proper substrate preparation and mortar application. It cannot compensate for excessive substrate variation or eliminate inherent tile warpage.
Periodically checking mortar coverage is also important. Applying additional pressure through a leveling component does not guarantee that the required mortar transfer has been achieved beneath the tile.
XPro clips and spin spacers establish a specific joint width at the locations where they are installed. Depending on the layout and system being used, separate tile spacers may still be useful elsewhere in the installation.
The selected XPro joint size should match the grout-joint requirements of the project. A leveling-system component should not be used to force a narrower joint than the tile and installation conditions permit.
For more information, see our tile spacer sizes and grout-joint spacing guide.
Whether using clips and wedges or spin spacers and caps, XPro should be treated as one component of the overall tile-setting process. Successful installation still depends on substrate preparation, layout, setting-material selection, troweling technique, mortar coverage, grout-joint selection, and appropriate movement accommodation.
