Shower Niches

A shower niche is a recessed storage compartment built into a tiled shower wall for shampoo, soap, bottles, and other shower items. Unlike a shelf that projects from the wall, a recessed shower niche uses space within the wall assembly to provide storage while preserving more of the usable shower area.

A prefab shower niche provides a preformed structure for the recessed opening, while a site-built niche is framed and constructed during installation. Prefabricated niches can reduce the amount of forming required, but both methods still need proper integration with the surrounding wall, waterproofing, and finished tile assembly.

Shower niches must be properly integrated with the waterproofing system because they create corners, seams, and transitions within the shower wall. Some niches incorporate waterproof construction, while others require additional membrane or sealing products. Connections between the niche and surrounding wall should be treated according to the system requirements.

Many prefab shower niches are sized for installation within common wall framing, but the available opening depends on actual stud spacing, framing dimensions, and obstructions inside the wall. Compare the niche's required rough opening with the measured wall cavity rather than selecting it solely from its listed exterior dimensions.

Some shower niches include multiple compartments or can accommodate compatible shelves that divide a larger recessed opening into separate storage areas. Shelf options depend on the niche design, dimensions, material, and installation system. Waterproofing, support, drainage, and finished tile layout should also be considered when adding shelves.

The finished bottom surface of a shower niche should provide the drainage characteristics required by the shower and waterproofing system. Depending on the product, slope can be incorporated into the niche or established during installation. Follow the niche and waterproofing manufacturers' requirements when preparing the finished tiled surface.

Shower niche placement depends on storage needs, wall framing, plumbing, other concealed components, waterproofing, and tile layout. The location should provide practical access without interfering with the wall structure or utilities. Planning the niche before tile installation also allows its edges to coordinate more effectively with the finished tile layout.
