Shower Drains

Linear shower drains collect water along an elongated channel and can support a single-plane floor slope in compatible layouts. Square shower drains function as localized point drains and commonly use a floor sloped toward the drain from multiple directions. The appropriate design depends on shower layout, tile format, plumbing, and waterproofing.

Linear drains are frequently used in curbless showers because compatible layouts can direct water toward the drain across a single sloped plane. Square and other point drains can also be used in properly designed curbless systems. Drain location, floor elevation, slope, waterproofing, and surrounding bathroom transitions must all be coordinated.

A tileable shower drain uses a removable cover or insert designed to receive compatible tile so the visible drain coordinates with the surrounding shower floor. Water enters through openings around the tiled insert. Tileable covers are available for certain linear and square drain systems and must match the underlying drain assembly.

Bonded waterproofing systems often use shower drains with bonding flanges or compatible flashing components that connect the waterproofing membrane to the drain assembly. Other shower systems can use different drainage connections. The drain and waterproofing products should be specifically approved for use together according to their manufacturers' installation requirements.

Linear shower drains are commonly paired with large-format tile because certain drain placements allow the shower floor to use a single-plane slope. This can reduce the number of directional cuts required around a point drain. Tile size, drain position, slope, surface characteristics, and waterproofing system should still be considered together.

Square shower drains can be centered or offset when the shower design, plumbing, base, and waterproofing system allow it. Moving a point drain changes the dimensions and slope of the surrounding floor planes, so drain position should be established before constructing the shower base and planning the tile layout.

Shower drain selection depends on the plumbing connection, required drainage capacity, shower dimensions, water delivery, drain configuration, and system requirements. Linear drain length also depends on its placement and floor design. Verify drain and plumbing specifications rather than choosing a drain solely by the visible grate dimensions.

Start with the shower layout, waterproofing method, and plumbing configuration. Then consider linear versus square drainage, drain location, tile size, floor slope, shower dimensions, outlet requirements, waterproofing compatibility, and preferred grate or tileable cover. Select components designed to work together as part of the complete shower assembly.
